The National Hindu Youth Federation (N.H.Y.F.) consists of concerned and interested youths who are dedicated to bringing together Hindu youth on a common platform irrespective of their linguistic, cultural or religious differences. On a broader level, the N.H.Y.F. is committed to promoting awareness in politics, culture, health, education and social welfare among Hindu youth.
The concept of a Hindu Youth Organisation first emerged at a meeting of interested Hindu youth in 1984. This was followed by a meeting in 1987, which served as another step towards achieving the aim of fulfilling the need for a representative Hindu Youth structure. Arising from the increasing enthusiasm among the youth and individuals from the community, a historic National Hindu Youth Convention was held in December/ January of 1988 /1989 in the Transvaal. The convention was attended by about 500 youths from around the country, who, after much discussions, debates and deliberation, committed themselves to promoting awareness of Hinduism. It was at this convention and in this spirit that an ad-hoc committee was formed from representatives of three provinces (Natal, Transvaal and Cape) in South Africa.
It was through the commitment and dedication of the ad-hoc committee that the N.H.Y.F. was born. The first phase of the launch of the N.H.Y.F. involved mobilising support of Hindu Youth and this took the form of a mini-workshop. Subsequently, the N.H.Y.F. was officially launched in Durban, on 31 March 1990. The National Hindu Youth Day which was launched in 1992, is today, an annual event.
The N.H.Y.F. consists of five forums that focus on religion, culture, politics, economics and education. Through the above forums, the N.H.Y.F. embarks on a variety of activities of interest to the youth. These activities include, the fostering of communication and working with various youth and other organisations, attending of ecological conferences, hosting of educational conferences and workshops, participating in health, political, social and other forums.
It is through these initiatives that the N.H.Y.F. has emerged as the most potent and dynamic Hindu Youth organisation in the country. Given the diverse cultures and population groups in South Africa, the N.H.Y.F. is committed to "Unity in Diversity" .
The Hindu youth of today have a vital role to play in society, at all levels. Hindu youth are charged with the responsibility of political and social transformation, contributing towards a post- apartheid South African society, and important of all- to be the bearers of the torch of Hindu Dharma.
